Heather Unganyi Watson (Pitjantjatjara) was born at Aliwanyawanyu rock hole, the place of the Ngintaka Tjukurpa (Perentie Lizard). With custodial ties to this story, she carries body markings that signify Ngintaka and a responsibility to care for that knowledge. She was the second wife of Tjuruparu Geoffrey Watson, a respected senior law man and a founding artist with Irrunytju Arts; many years living and travelling with him inform the way her paintings map rock holes, travelling lines and Country. Today Heather paints through Minyma Kutjara Arts in Irrunytju/Wingellina, a community near the tri-state border of Western Australia, the Northern Territory and South Australia. Her work reflects the places of her birthplace and the life she shared with Tjuruparu, carrying these stories forward with clarity and respect.
